As she softened with age, I developed a good and loving relationship with my mother. My sister and she knocked sparks off each other til the very end; and I'm only beginning to learn to love my sister, and to understand how much she has suffered through not having had a loving relationship with our mum. Family is so complicated.
I shared this benediction at the end of my mother's day service this morning. After the service a woman (who usually shows a pretty feisty face to the world) came and spoke to me about how sad she was that her relationship with her mother had been so difficult. She was just holding back tears and I felt very moved that she felt safe enough to share this difficult stuff with me.
